Slime and Squirrelly Noises: A Flash Fiction Story by J. Elizabeth Vincent
“Right after you went to bed, there was this bright light right outside. I went to the window to check, but I couldn’t see anything. It was so bright!
“I covered my eyes, and suddenly, it felt like I was being pulled by my … my nose … right through the wall. You wouldn’t believe it! Then, it was really, really cold, and I could feel metal under my feet. When I opened my eyes, I was inside a ship! A spaceship, Mom! With all these colored lights and beeping and squirrelly noises. It was crazy. And there were these creatures—they had six eyes a piece and superlong fingers!
They must have been double! No, triple! No, quadruple jointed, I tell ya! They were at least seven feet tall, and their skin was green, just like they say. There was slime, like great big yellow boogers, dripping from their skin. I tried to get away, but I was surrounded! I screamed and screamed for you, but you didn’t come!”
He sniffled and took in a deep breath, pulling the covers up to his chin. "Mom, I was … I was …"
Wait for it.
“Mom, I was probed!” A great sob erupted from his mouth, and his hands, with their dirty fingernails, covered his face. One eye peeked out from between his fingers.
I gave my ten-year-old a flat stare. His cheeks were flushed and his brown hair was mussed from the telling.
“Wes, aliens or not, you still have to go to school today.”
“MOOOOOOMMMM!!!”
To the sounds of his grunts and grumbles, I turned away down the hall. I took out my phone and pulled up the email address for the director of the local youth theater.
